When you join a yoga class for the first few times, you might have heard a few strange words that are not often used in your daily life. As yoga is originally from India and Sanskrit is one of the common languages used in India. Thus, yoga teaching is originally in Sanskrit and has been translated into many different languages, but most yoga teachers still use some Sanskrit words in the session to respect and remind us of the origin of yoga. Here is a 5 Sanskrit words that you should know before entering a yoga session.
• Asana (AH’-sah-nah): It means “seat,” in Sanskrit but in yoga class, it means “pose.”
• Namaste (nah’-mah’-stay): It is a respectful greeting. It also means the divine light within me salutes the divine light within you.
• Om (Aum): Is the sound that is chanted in the yoga mantra before and/or after a yoga session to tune into the higher self, connect to the universe, and deepen meditation.
• Shanti (Shan-tee): It means peace. Usually, chant at the end of Mantras after Om. Some yoga classes might not chant Shanti. When you chant Shanti three times it represents peace in body, speech, and mind.
• Savasana (shuh-VAH-suh-nuh): It is a meditative posture in which one lies on one’s back that is typically considered the final resting pose in yoga Savasana is a pose of total relaxation.
